The basics of jewellery-making in metal are covered through demonstrations and simple projects. For all levels - beginners intermediate and advanced - enabling those with some previous experience to extend their skills.
Beginners will learn basic jewellery making skills - piercing, filing, drilling, polishing, annealing and soldering.
Intermediate/ advanced learners will have the opportunity to work on individual projects and to practise, improve and perfect your basic skills. You will have one-to-one advice and demonstrations from the tutor when needed.

Beginners
• Cut and form sheet metal and wire
• Anneal, texture and solder metal
• Experiment with materials and finishes
• Design and make a piece of work using skills you have learnt
• Be aware of, and work to, the health and safety guidelines.
Intermediate
• Set your goals with help from the tutor
• Sketch out your design ideas
• Use improved jewellery-making skills e.g. piercing, filing, drilling, polishing, annealing and soldering.
• Use a new skill
• Make a piece of jewellery to your own design.
Advanced
• Set your goals in discussion with the tutor
• Present a sketchbook full of ideas and apply these designs into finished pieces
• Achieve a high standard of design and craftsmanship
• Realise your designs by making use of challenging techniques (e.g. mount making, basic stone setting, wax carving, enamelling, chain making).
For all levels of ability; beginners, intermediate and advanced.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Through demonstrations, handouts, practical activities, group discussions and individual tuition. There will be recommendations for books and information on current exhibitions which you can visit in your own time.
Tools and equipment: City Lit provides almost all the basic tools and equipment you will need for jewellery making. You will need to provide some items, such as saw blades and a sketchbook or notebook. There will be a handout detailing the list of items and where to buy them. The cost is about £15 (correct at time of writing June11). As you gain experience you might want to invest in your own tools.
Materials: City Lit will also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals (copper, gilding metal, etc.) and other materials (paper, enamel, etc.,) chemicals (pickle, borax, etc.,) and sundries (etching resist, polishing compound, etc.). However, all precious metals (silver, gold, etc.), stones, and other materials you need for your specific projects must be provided by you.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

You may wish to progress onto the City Lit jewellery course which is made up of 3 separate years of study and leads to the 7111, 7112 and 7113 certificates in creative techniques. Advanced students may wish to join year 3 of this course or join a Progressive Jewellery class. There are also specialist short jewellery classes available if you wish to improve your basic skills or concentrate on a particular technique.
