Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will cover all the necessary skills to help run a successful jewellery business. It aims to respond to individual requirements to give confidence to integrate competent business skills into a good working practise.

What topics will we cover?

Initially this will be led by the students so I can respond to questions and requirements. We will cover an introduction to pricing; information on hallmarking; simple paperwork; record keeping; approaching galleries and nurturing good relationships with outlets; marketing and promotion. Any other areas you may wish to cover.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Have an awareness of good business practice.
- Have a confident and professional attitude towards your product and its promotion.
- Have an understanding of how to source and identify your potential market and customers.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable if you are a jewellery maker either researching setting up a business or in the early stages of doing so.

You should be able to understand simple written and verbal instructions to follow demonstrations and read handouts and health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers in order to do very simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through discussion, advice and guidance from both tutor and peers, underpinned with examples, and individually tailored advice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Note taking is essential. Please bring examples of any paperwork and promotional material already used if you would like feedback. It would also be helpful to see images of your work and details of the market you are aiming at, so I can attempt to focus advice.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
