Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a structured course certificated by City & Guilds. As such, you are required to undertake a number of projects which include basic colour and design work that contribute to a portfolio developed over the two terms, attending one day a week. The artwork acts as an inspiration for a number of jewellery-making projects.

What topics will we cover?

As part of the course structure you will be making:
- a ring with a stone setting
- a brooch with two or more decorative treatments and an appropriate filling
- a steel punch
- a decorated pendant of mixed materials with a hand made chain.
You will also develop a folder of work that will include colour, texture, collected imagery, notes, costings and evaluations, and a sketchbook of ideas.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- cut metal with a saw
- drill holes in metal
- etch metal
- set a stone
- have basic knowledge of forging and forming metal
- polish and patinate metal
- have a body of work that will act as an inspiration for your work
- understand how to cost and evaluate the work
- know the basics of tool making.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed for beginners or those with a very basic knowledge of jewellery-making.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class. Please contact the “Skills for learning and life” team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations and projects, group discussions and examples of traditional and contemporary jewellery.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

City Lit provides almost all the basic tools and equipment you will need for jewellery-making.

We also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals (copper, gilding metal, etc.) and other materials (paper, enamel, etc.,) chemicals (pickle, borax, etc.,) and sundries (etching resist, polishing compound, etc.)

There will be some items you need to buy yourself, such as saw blades, all precious metals (silver, gold, etc.) and stones. You will also need a sketchbook for your design work and to write notes on exhibitions or any other relevant information. As you gain experience you might want to invest in your own tools.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be folder checks and discussions on a regular basis and a certificate awarded to successful students completing the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
