Course outline

What is the course about?

The City Lit jewellery course 2 (intermediate) incorporates the City & Guilds level 2 certificate in design and creative techniques 7911 jewellery. Taking place one day a week over a year, this structured course aims to improve your skills in the design and manufacture of jewellery. You will be expected to make more demanding items than on less advanced courses, as well as developing your skills in observation, recording, planning and research.

What topics will we cover?

You will be required to make, for City & Guilds, two items of jewellery - a cluster ring incorporating minimum of six stones, and a chain. You are also expected to conduct brief research on rings and chains, covering topics such as historical and cultural development illustrated with examples, contextual significance and contemporary practice.

A range of making skills will be taught, focusing on stone setting. This will include gypsy, shoulder bezel, pedestal prong, basket, and tube settings. Skills associated with these, such as tube making and the use of collet punches, will also be covered, as well as some other techniques which you might not choose to use in the course but are essential for a studio jeweller.

In addition, there are projects based on the design elements of colour, texture, line, shape and form. Design exercises will be carried out in class, led by experts in the area, and you will be expected to compile a reference folder covering all of these design elements.

You will be introduced to other skills essential to becoming a successful designer-maker, such as digital photography, costing, writing an artist’s statement, and critiquing.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Make accomplished pieces of jewellery to your own design, incorporating skills such as:
- basic texturing procedures for metal
- carving / modelling wax
- stone setting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should ideally have finished City & Guilds 7111 / 7822 or equivalent successfully, or have a basic knowledge of jewellery-making and design.

You should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and hand-outs, and health and safety information. You will be invited to take part in group discussions and critique sessions, where it is essential for you to be able to communicate with your fellow classmates. For your coursework you will be asked to carry out simple research activities: this means that you need to be able to select and use different texts to obtain information, read and summarise them, digest the meaning of them to form an informed opinion, then express these.

You will need to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers and will be asked to recognise and draw geometric shapes, use simple formulae (e.g. finding the volume of a geometric shape) and read tables, graphs and diagrams.

You will need to be able to find information from websites, and should be aware that a lot of communication between the tutors and the student group will take place via e-mails.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you might benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class. Please contact the 'Skills for life' team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through demonstrations and projects, handouts and technical notes, advice and guidance. There will be group and individual discussions and tutorials.
You will need to carry out some work outside the class, in design, research and making. It will be useful if you can do some metalwork at home. Alternatively, you could consider taking another course simultaneously to supplement your making time.

Whilst Masako Hamaguchi is the course leader, and responsible for the overall running of the course, many specialist tutors are also involved.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials are covered by the course fee. City Lit has basic jewellery-making tools and equipment, and chemicals.

If you wish to work in precious metals, or with semi-precious or precious stones, you will need to supply your own. You will also need to bring in all sundry items such as saw blades, drill bits, abrasive papers, polishing mops, sketchbooks, notebooks, pens and pencils, and a series of folders. You will also need to cover any entrance fees to exhibitions, fairs or other events.

You may choose to buy your own basic tools to use during the course; advice and guidance will be given when appropriate.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. *PLEASE NOTE: All interviews have taken place and all spaces have been offered.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. The tutor is required to look at your practical work, sketchbooks and folders on a regular, ongoing basis. There will be individual tutorials at the end of every project, as necessary. At the end of the course, a certificate will be awarded to everyone completing it successfully. There will also be an exhibition of work made on the course at the end.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. The tutor will also appreciate you sharing your views and making suggestions on informal basis at any time.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
