Course outline

What is the course about?

To develop your practical skills in making mosaics directly onto a surface.
To develop your creative skills associated with making mosaics.
To explore materials and learn about their appropriate use.
To explore the properties of mosaics.
To build a basic knowledge and understanding of the world of mosaics.

What topics will we cover?

Your own ideas for content will be encouraged and you will need to bring visual source material as a starting point. The course will allow for each student to complete a mosaic using the direct method (other methods will also be covered). The sequential processes will involve: the chopping of marble and/or cutting of glass, ceramic tiles or other matter into appropriate shapes and fixing them onto a flat or non-flat base, as it would be onto a wall or floor. We will also look at themes such as tonal and size values, intermingling of colour and andamento (the coursing of rows of tesserae, or tiles).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Research and develop ideas for further projects.
- Complete a mosaic on your own using the direct method.
- Describe a range of expressive characteristics in the mosaic idiom.
- Create or draw at least three different styles in mosaics.
- Describe the at times contentious relationship between mosaics and painting in a historical context.

Advanced students will be able to cover direct method, indirect or double indIrect methods.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for beginners or for students who would like to continue exploring the medium.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, practical work on individual projects, informal group discussions, slides and books, individual tuition and other students projects.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A selection of books on mosaics will be at your disposal during the course. A materials allowance is included in the course fee which will cover most of what is required. If you would like to use smalti glass or a fair amount of vitreous tiles (only a limited amount of the latter will be available on the course), or other materials, please bring your own. Edgar Udny & Co Ltd supply mosaic materials. However you may prefer to come to the first lesson before deciding to purchase materials. (N.B. This is not applicable for one-week summer courses).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
