Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is a chance to develop your own work and ideas through a range of media, including drawing, painting and photography. From initial starting points in your sketchbooks, you will work through experimental processes before editing and refining your work into a finished piece.

What topics will we cover?

The course will include
- working from a variety of sources eg sketchbook ideas, photographs and projections.
- exploring the properties of acrylic and oil paint, drawing materials, mixing media and collage.
- discussion of the work and development of the initial idea as a vital part of the class.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

1) Build up a sketchbook as a research tool for a painting/artwork
2) Use a variety of art materials to expand and develop your initial visual ideas.
3) Take your initial idea through a process that refines and changes it
4) Use the work of current artists as a reference and influence on your own art practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course will suit you if you already have some ideas/work in your sketchbooks. It will also suit those who come with an open mind and willingness to experiment with mediums, and to develop their own ideas with unexpected outcomes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Talks, practical work, demonstrations, individual tutoring and group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A sketchbook with drawings/ideas.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
