This course is a unique opportunity to explore the sensitivity of water-based media such as inks, watercolour, water-soluble pen, pencil and crayon. We will work in series, make inventive combinations of media to draw from your own found imagery, photographs and sketches. Applying a range of techniques to different grounds, we will study the expressive qualities of surface, combined with a range of imagery, searching out ideas and themes that can promote visually stunning and personal work.
The course will cover exercises and experimental techniques for watercolour. There will be experiments with water-based media and collage applied to various surfaces to create atmospheric mixed-media studies. We will reference contemporary and historical artists who have used watercolour media experimentally, such as Marlene Dumas, Georgia O’Keeffe and Peter Doig, as starting points for some of the exercises.
- expand your creativity through experiments with water-based media and collage techniques
- combine watercolour with other media to enhance your painting style
- explore visual elements (shape, colour etc) to develop a composition
- present a composition from your own source imagery (such as cuttings, photos or studies).
Previous experience in drawing and painting is helpful, but no experience in watercolour is necessary.
