This course would be useful taken on its own or as a follow on from the preceding course “Introduction to Watercolour: techniques”.The theme of the course is composition in watercolour. Students will be shown three different methods of how to develop an interesting composition in watercolour as well as some revision of basic watercolour techniques.
With the emphasis on composition you will use collage, found images, sketches & your own photographs as starting-points to develop a watercolour painting. Some revision of basic watercolour methods will be shown also for those who missed the previous course “Introduction to Watercolour: techniques”.
By the end of the course you should be able to:
- create a watercolour composition from sketches/ photos/ found images/ collage
- apply masking-out &/ or textural techniques in a painting
- investigate wet-on-wet & layering methods of paint application
- explore colour-mixing methods in watercolour.
For beginners, or as a follow-up to course:” Introduction to watercolour: Techniques”: VM628 or VM633; some drawing experience could be helpful, but is not essential.
Studio-based, through practical tasks, demonstrations, regular individual feedback from tutor, group & pair discussion, & self- assessment with tutor feedback.
The course fee includes most materials. Extra watercolour paper, may be purchased from the tutor at cost.
The Learning Resources Centre keeps a comprehensive stock of art books, etc and membership is free to enrolled students.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
