Course outline

What is the course about?

This is an oil painting course based on outdoor sketches to be done in nearby locations, such as Lincolns Inn Fields, the river by Somerset House and London parks. Finished work will be created in the studio. Outside visits are weather dependent. During the course we will explore the process of combining and using sketches made on the spot to produce a series of landscape and urbanscape paintings. We will learn how to make choices from a wealth of visual information to produce a painting that’s not merely a reproduction but a personal version and interpretation of what we have seen. We will look at and learn from the work of various landscape artists.

What topics will we cover?

- Oil painting techniques, colour theory and mixing
- Sketching outdoors and gathering information
- Working up sketches into paintings
- The history of landscape, both rural and urban, particularly the work of artists who have used outside material, such as Constable, Frank Auerbach, Carel Weight, Turner, Sickert and Monet.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Sketch views of outdoor situations
- Alter and extend sketches into paintings
- Adapt a composition in the studio from sketches made on the spot
- Use oil paints, including the techniques of 'alla prima' (wet on wet), glazes and 'scumbling'
- Prepare different surfaces before painting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is open to all levels, but some drawing experience would be helpful.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- You will work between a chosen outdoor site and the studio. This will give you time to accumulate enough material and then be able to focus and concentrate on the resulting paintings.
- Teaching will be through one-to-one tuition, group discussion, printed visual information and slides.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to provide small jars with lids for painting medium and rags for painting. As we will be working partly outside, please bring cushions, stools and anything else that will help the practical problems of sitting and moving around a public space.

Suggested - if you actually paint rather than sketch outside, then two sheets of cardboard and pencils taped on to them will make a portable folio that prevents the paintings from smudging too much.

We will provide, to a limited extent, small canvas boards. Bigger ones will be charged for. All other materials are provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
