Course outline

What is the course about?

Broaden your understanding of visual language, and focus on particular areas in painting in more depth. Develop a greater proficiency in the use of oil or acrylic paint and become familiar with a varied range of techniques and their appropriate applications.

What topics will we cover?

There will be a variety of painting exercises and projects aimed at developing your painting skills and understanding of painting. Projects will vary according to the strengths and interests of each course tutor, however the underlying core elements that need to be learned will not differ.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- apply painting methods such as glazing, impasto and wet on wet
- use formal elements, such as tone, composition and colour effectively
- be aware of the effects of surface quality and texture in an image
- have basic skills in appraising your own work
- start to select areas of interest for further development.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need some experience and it is helpful to have completed a 'Painting 1' or 'Introduction to painting' course.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical work, individual and group tutoring, group discussion, demonstrations, visual presentations and handouts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course fee includes basic materials. Acrylic paint and all other materials are supplied by City Lit. The library is free to all students and keeps a good range of art books. Please wear old clothes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
