The class was perfect for learning to work in oils. I had never worked with colours before and loved it. Techniques were clearly and sensitively explained. It was a warm and friendly atmosphere and I felt relaxed after the stresses of the week. It was great getting covered in paint too! It gave me the confidence to enrol in another art course at City Lit.

I felt that we could have done a lot more over this 10 week course than just a couple of still life paintings, learning to use tonality and colour and using acrylic paint and oil paint. We should have done one painting per session, used gouache and watercolour, done a life painting, landscape painting and abstract painting.

The teaching on this course was very well organised and structured. We learned and practised techniques, first using only black and white, before trying them out in colour, until we became confident with them. The feedback from the tutor was very helpful and the class was really enjoyable. I now feel I have enough knowledge to continue on my own.

This course should be named "Still Life Painting for Beginners". I was disappointed that every week still life painting was the main activity. having said that it was very good to learn how to do this and we did learn about using colour, tone, 3D representation. However, it would have been better if there was more variety and freedom to explore the use of paint and use more self expression on a course intended to be an introduction to painting.

I really enjoyed this course as it gave me confidence to try various painting techniques and methods that I hadn't tried before. A good variety of topics were covered, and my only complaint would be that the time passed too quickly!

Painting 1 is one of many courses I have done at City Lit. The expertise and quality of teaching of the tutor was second to none and inspired me to continue painting at home. Reference to work by various artists helped me understand how to use techniques myself.
