Course outline

What is the course about?

Get painting now - this is a two-day introduction to painting technique and the use of materials. The course looks at how one might approach Oil and Acrylic painting with an emphasis on the practical i.e. colour mixing and the function of painting mediums.

The essential aim of this course is to increase the confidence of the student, in the hope that this provides an invaluable platform for future painting courses or individual artistic practice.

What topics will we cover?

On the course we will be exploring the use of oils and acylic paints and discussing the difference between them. The course provides an introduction to various painting and drawing mediums, such as pen, ink, charcoal etc. Over the duration of the two days students will be exploring these various materials, firstly through painting and drawing from still life objects then moving on to working from a life model.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify and organise the equipment and materials used for painting
- Apply colour mixing techniques
- Develop application skills in oil painting
- Learn about painting through experimentation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course which does not require previous painting experience.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor-led discussions and demonstrations will provide a basis for learning and give way to practical applications and experimentation in using the materials.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All necessary materials will be provided. However if you prefer to paint on canvas rather than paper you should bring in your own (minimum A3).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
