Course outline

What is the course about?

Get painting now in this two-day introduction to painting materials and techniques. Get answers to questions about how to construct an oil painting, with an emphasis on safe and non-toxic methods of working with oils. The course is about increasing your confidence, and this will prove invaluable if you want to start other painting courses.

What topics will we cover?

The essential principles of using oil paints and painting mediums, and an introduction to colour mixing principles which can also be applied to acrylic and watercolour painting. Ways of applying paint and painting surfaces will be discussed, and you will have an opportunity to experiment with directly producing some oil studies.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- identify and organise the equipment and materials used for painting
- apply colour mixing techniques
- develop application skills in painting with acrylic paint
- have learnt about painting through experimentation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course which does not require previous painting experience.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor-led discussions and demonstrations will provide a basis for learning and give way to practical applications and experimentation in using the materials.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring in a palette knife and a canvas or paper suitable for painting on in oils, (minimum size A3), each of the two days.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
