Course outline

What is the course about?

This course aims to give an introduction to contemporary fine art practice.

What topics will we cover?

The course will develop a range of skills centred around drawing, painting, 3-D, printmaking, digital arts, photography and mixed media. The various specialist tutors will provide insight and information about the different approaches to fine art practice. This will be supported by an introduction to art theory which complements the various practical projects.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- apply observational drawing skills
- use a variety of paint handling techniques in oil and acryclic media
- use a variety of non-press-based printmaking techniques
- begin to develop an understanding of critical theory within the context of personal artistic production.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is the first stage of a programme intended for those who wish to explore practical fine art disciplines in a structured teaching environment over a sustained period. It is recommended that everyone joining the course has done some drawing and painting courses, for instance 'Drawing 1' and 'Drawing continued', or 'Painting 1' and 'Painting continued' at City Lit. An advisory interview is offered to everyone applying, to make sure the course will suit their needs.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will develop your work through a series of interrelated, set projects. Teaching methods will include individual tutorials, group discussions, seminars, practical demonstrations and projects, and museum and gallery visits.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There is a basic materials allowance, although you will be required to buy specialist items, such as canvas, stretchers, oils and sculpture materials. Tutors in the class will give advice on these. There will be no need to bring anything to the first session.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The course prepares you for stage 2 of the City Lit fine art course and aims to provide you with a range of options upon which you may begin to develop personal work. Entry to stage 2 will be by interview/advice session, where we will look at a folder of your work and advise you on your options for further study.
