Course outline

What is the course about?

This course develops the skills and sense of critical reflection acquired in CLFA: Stage 1. It provides a framework for those wishing to explore and develop their own fine art practice. Emphasis will be on personal development in a supportive environment with continual feedback and evaluation of work produced.

What topics will we cover?

There will be initial research projects to help you find a basis for your work. Thereafter you will be able to develop an individual programme of study through negotiation with your tutors. Some art history and contextual studies are integral to the programme and you are encouraged to consider the relationship of theory to practice. Students participate in a final exhibition, which is aimed at giving you both experience of showing your work and helping you to plan, organise and promote a group exhibition.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- initiate and develop personal work
- become increasingly adept at assessing your Progress and results.
- begin to relate your work to the various aspects of contemporary fine art practice
- encounter issues surrounding presentation and exhibiting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

It is recommended that prospective applicants to this course will have completed the City Lit Fine Art: Stage 1 or an equivalent. Interviews and portfolio checks are arranged for entry to the course; these will provide an opportunity for information to be given and will ensure that the level is right. It will be assumed that you have an aptitude with drawing and some experience of working with a range of other materials.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be expected to respond individually to the programme, working closely with the tutors. Teaching will be in the form of seminars, video and slide lectures, gallery visits, discussion and personal tutorials.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There is a basic materials allowance in the fee, although students will be required to buy specialist items (canvas, stretchers, oils, sculpture materials). Advice on these will be given by tutors in the class. There will be no need to bring anything to the first session. The end of the year show may also involve some extra cost.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you feedback both individually and through group discussion. At the end of the course you will be given the opportunity to complete a record of your achievements which will be verified by your tutor.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

After completing CLFA: Stage 2, students might set up a studio, make BA/MA applications, or put together a programme from the City Lit specific to developing needs.
