This course allows you to develop the skills and sense of critical reflection acquired in stage 1 of the City Lit fine art course. It provides a framework for you to explore and develop your own fine art practice. Emphasis will be on personal development in a supportive environment, with continual feedback and evaluation of the work you produce.
There will be initial research projects to help you find a basis for your work. You will then be able to develop an individual programme of study through discussion with your tutors. Some art history and contextual studies are integral to the programme and you are encouraged to consider the relationship of theory to practice. You will participate in a final exhibition, which is aimed at giving you both experience of showing your work and helping you to plan, organise and promote a group exhibition.
- initiate and develop personal work
- feel increasingly adept at assessing your progress and results
- begin to relate your work to the various aspects of contemporary fine art practice
- deal confidently with issues surrounding presentation and exhibiting.
To join the course it is recommended that you have completed stage 1 of the City Lit fine art course or equivalent. Interviews and portfolio checks are arranged for entry to the course so that we can give you all the information you need and make sure the level is right. It will be assumed that you have an aptitude with drawing and some experience of working with a range of other materials.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
You will be expected to respond individually to the programme, working closely with the tutors. Teaching will be in the form of seminars, video and slide lectures, gallery visits, discussion and personal tutorials.
There is a basic materials allowance in the fee, although you will be required to buy specialist items (canvas, stretchers, oils, sculpture materials). Advice on these will be given by tutors in the class. There will be no need to bring anything to the first session. The end of the year show may also involve some extra cost.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
