What is the course about?

Term 1: Shape and colour
Explore intuitive and selective processes through an experimental use of colour and shape. You will be given an opportunity to search out personal subject matter and the confidence to develop ideas. The course will provide stimulating opportunities for visual discovery, exploiting the use of chance and accident, with new ways of combining water-based paint with collage and drawing.

The Radiant Image is a unique set of linked courses that serves as an ideal follow-on from shorter courses. The study of luminosity in painting is approached through structured and /or individual projects. You can attend for the year, or one term, to build up innovative, less traditional, skills in water-based painting.

What topics will we cover?

Two core group projects involving structured exercises will form the basis from which you will develop your individual study programme. You will be introduced to a range of drawing and painting media and you will learn about methods of application, mark making and colour mixing. We will consider the visual impact of particular combinations of materials and techniques. Projects will then develop from the imaginative interaction of subject, medium and elements of chance. We will also be informing our practice by referring to other artists, and there may be opportunities for visual research in museums.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

o use your skills in colour mixing, use of shape and composition
o experiment with combinations of drawing / painting application methods and media
o confidently explore chance and accident as a creative method
o start to identify possible visual themes for individual study.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for anyone with a bold spirit and/or a basic knowledge of watercolour or drawing.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical projects, individual guidance and encouragement, group discussion and, when appropriate, the use of reproductions of artworks as added example/stimulus. There may be some visual research off-site in a gallery/museum or outside.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A supply of basic drawing materials and paper is provided throughout the year. Watercolour is provided for the first two weeks, and thereafter you will need to provide your own. Recommended colours will be discussed at the first meeting.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
