Course outline

What is the course about?

Term 2: Light and Selective Colour
Develop your personal painting language through experimentation. This term, the emphasis will be on looking at the effects of light in painting, use of restricted colour palettes and mark-making. This course will provide a stimulating opportunity for visual discovery, and an experimental approach to painting.

The Radiant Image is a unique set of linked courses that serves as an ideal follow-on from shorter courses. The study of luminosity in painting is approached through structured and/or individual projects. You can attend for the year, or one term, to build up innovative, less traditional, skills in water-based painting.

What topics will we cover?

Two core group projects, that will encourage individual study programmes, will be developed. You will build on skills in the use of drawing and painting media. You will consider the visual possibilities and potential of particular combinations of materials and techniques. Projects will continue to develop through negotiation, experimentation and selection. You will also continue informing your practice by referring to particular artists, and individual research in museums will be recommended.

New learners, please see Radiant Image 1, course VM594.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• experiment with combinations of drawing / painting application methods and media
• develop a visual theme/form from observation and/or abstraction.
• expand your individual colour range
• have the confidence to experiment with pictorial space and composition.
• work with some independence regarding technique and subject matter.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for anyone with a bold spirit and/or a basic knowledge of watercolour or drawing.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical projects, individual guidance and encouragement, group discussion and, when appropriate, the use of reproductions of artworks as added example/stimulus. Plus some visual research off-site in a gallery/museum or outside.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A supply of basic drawing materials and paper is provided throughout the year. Watercolour is provided for the first two weeks, and thereafter you will need to provide your own. Recommended colours will be discussed at the first meeting.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course is designed to complement and extend ideas and themes that may be encountered on a wide variety of other courses throughout the visual arts programme.
