Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is suited for those students who wish to learn how to use their cameras manual settings, so that eventually they will be able to use them creatively.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn about the functions of the camera (aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, lenses, exposure, composition, studio lighting); you will also be encouraged to develop an awareness of photographic practices and how to convey meanings with photographs. You will also learn how to import your images in Photoshop and produce basic alterations.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- make use of the manual settings on your camera
- begin to use shutter speed and depth of field creatively
- Import images into an image editing Program (Photoshop), Perform simple edits and output to a CD
- use appropriate digital file types and resize for various outputs (email, web, print).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for complete beginners or for those willing to take a refresher course in the basics of photography

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught with workshops, short lectures, practical exercises, tutorials, handouts. You will also have the option to pursue an individual project.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will be expected to purchase the materials for your use.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Through individual and group tutorials and the tutors observation on an ongoing basis.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
