Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is suited for those students who wish to develop an independent creative photographic project:
they may already be working on ideas that would benefit from developing further or simply wish to begin from scratch. The emphasis will be on content and ideas to be achieved with the most appropriate format.
The course would be suitable for students who have already completed VY637 in term one and want to continue with a project or start a new one, but equally suitable for newcomers who have some photographic experience.

What topics will we cover?

During the course you will be encouraged to think about photography as a broad set of practices with specific goals and languages. For example, you will think about photography in relation to sculpture and moving image and be encouraged to experiment across disciplines.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Produce a body of photographic work or a final individual piece that fulfils your brief.
- Discover a new way of working that leads into a more long term project that you will be able to develop beyond the end of the course.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suited for those students who are able to take photographs independently and have a some understanding on how to use the manual settings of a camera as well as some notions of lighting.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught via illustrated lectures, workshops, group and individual tutorials.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will be expected to cover the costs of the material you use.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?
