Course outline

What is the course about?

Using a range of basic printmaking processes, mixed-media and collage techniques, combined with simple bookbinding methods, to make a handmade artist's book.

What topics will we cover?

The assemblage of materials, ideas, design and making of a handmade book. You will be encouraged to be flexible and there will be an emphasis on expressive qualities in the use of printing surfaces (plastic, lino and polystyrene), while exploring your theme/idea through the development of personal imagery.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Demonstrate various book formats by making a small selection of dummy book forms.
Experiment with a basic printmaking process such as relief printing or monotype.
Use a simple bookbinding method combined with basic printmaking and mixed-media processes to construct a handmade book.
Use personal imagery to build a visual narrative as content/theme for your handmade book.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge necessary, although some appreciation or experience of drawing will be helpful.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations of methods and techniques, visual aids, practical exercises and one-to-one tuition will be given.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring to class a packet of disposable vinyl gloves and an overall for working with printing inks and white spirit. Basic materials such as inks, cartridge paper and white spirit are included in the course fee. You will be required to source some materials (decorative papers etc), to be advised by the tutor during the course. Lino can be purchased at cost in the class.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
