Learn how to make a simple etching, and explore how to use monotype printing as a form of background/random colour for your etched image. For the first session, please bring in source material (imagery, sketches, postcard etc.) as inspiration for your project work.
The project will be based on: preparing a composition developed from your source image and transcribing that to metal plate; preparing a metal plate for acid etching; learning how to ink up and take a printed impression using an etching press; and exploring experimental colour work as part of the printing process.
Etch an image into metal
Add random colour to your etched image via monotype printing
Prepare paper for intaglio printing
Print an etching plate to good standards in monochrome and colour.
The course is suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners. You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English for both health and safety purposes and to enable you to follow printmaking procedures. You should be able to take short written notes for your own use and occasionally make simple measurements using a ruler. Some basic drawing skills are required.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
You will be taught through demonstration of techniques, tutor observation of your work in progress and feedback, one-to-one discussion to ascertain your progress and understanding, and, where possible, examples of plate and prints relevant to the course work.
You will need to provide your own latex/polyvinyl disposable gloves, to keep your hands free of the oil-based printing inks that you will be using, and an overall/old shirt to protect your clothing.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
