If you believe that learning about different types of printmaking is by doing it, this is an excellent course.

The course is well described in the prospectus. We had the opportunity to create and print a variety of print types and we achieved a surprising amount and variety of work in the 10 week term of three hour classes. Students on the course had a wide variety of skills and skill levels, but all seemed to get satisfaction and a sense of achievement from their printmaking.
Be aware, printmaking is a messy business! - so it would be wise to wear older clothes and bring an apron. Expect to get printing ink under your nails! Teaching is a mix of group learning and individual advice and direction and is done with a light touch by the tutor, a printmaker of obvious skill and experience and with a good knowledge of printmaking methods and artists who have used the medium. If you want to learn about the different kinds of printing techniques listed in the syllabus I cannot think of a better or more enjoyable way of doing so.
It will help if you have an idea, before you start the course, of the nature of the images you hope to create, initially using 10cm square blocks, plates etc. and it may help if you buy the odd lino cut tool as the choice is limited and the ones supplied may not be very sharp! (A list of specialist shops is provided as a supplement to an excellent series of "handouts" prepared by the tutor and describing the various printing processes in easily understood steps.) Reviews of students work is done using projected digital photographs of all students work taken by the tutor at the end of each weeks printmaking.
If you think this course is right for you, it very probably is!

I have done this course 4 times and each time I learn something new. I now use the course to pursue some aspects in more breadth and depth and I chose one new technque/skill/area of printmaking to learn each time or I try to extend an area I've only touched upon briefly.
I like the fact there are people from a variety of backgrounds and the sessions looking at each other's work bring up some interesting discussion points. I think the teacher shows a wide range of inspiring artists and he is methodical and has an indepth knowledge of the subject both in practical and theoretical terms. I enjoy the fact I can experiment and mix different methods of printing in one piece of work.
