Course outline

What is the course about?

Using adapted traditional Japanese methods, you will learn how to make wonderful, large scale, colour woodblock prints. Suitable for all levels. Please bring source material (imagery, sketches, photos) for inspiration. These can be any size and as part of the process they will be simplified in terms of colour, shape and tone.

What topics will we cover?

Using your own ideas and imagery, we will develop designs that are appropriate for woodblock printing. Working on a relatively large scale (either 3’ x 2’ or 4’ x 3’), you will be using specialist tools to carve out areas of a wooden block ready for relief printing by hand. Eventually you may produce several different blocks to allow for printing multiple colours and a range of effects. You will be introduced to different weights and types of printing paper, exploring their particular qualities. As the week progress, you will develop a series of variations on your chosen images that demonstrate the expressive and transforming quality of this ancient printing medium.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Develop source material for printing
• Handle woodcutting tools competently and safely
• Ink up relief blocks for printing
• Print woodblocks by hand.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge of woodblock printmaking is necessary. If you have some printmaking experience you will be given the opportunity to broaden and extend your work by using these techniques.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Examples of the medium will be shown and explained. Procedures will be demonstrated as you begin block making and printing procedures.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All the basic tools and materials will be provided without further charge. Extra materials such as specialist papers are made available at cost price in the class. Please bring rags and old newspapers for cleaning. Don`t forget your source material for inspiration.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may want to study the subject at more advanced levels on full or part-time courses, or may be encouraged to extend your knowledge and experience of printmaking, and its relationship to related areas such as drawing and painting, via many courses available at City Lit.
