Course outline

What is the course about?

The course aims to develop your understanding of sculpture as a three dimensional means of expression through the medium of woodcarving.

What topics will we cover?

There will be discussion with illustrations on aspects of carved sculpture to give focus for the term’s work. You will be encouraged to make clay or plasticine models (maquettes) of your ideas before embarking on your carving. Your tutor will advise you on how to scale up your design onto the wood and will give you guidance on the use and care of carving tools throughout the course. Advice will also be offered on displaying completed sculptures and appropriate oils and varnishes.

If you would like to gain some ideas for the work you will make this term, we recommend a visit to the Victoria & Albert museum. They run the ‘V&A inspired by’ competition aimed specifically at part-time adult learners. Further information can be found on the V&A website http://www.vam.ac.uk/activ_events/events/inspiredby/.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Produce a suitable design in clay.
- Handle carving tools competently and safely.
- Carve in wood from your own ideas.
- Have an understanding of form and mass.
- Appreciate the work of other woodcarvers.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for all levels; for those who have no previous knowledge or experience of woodcarving and for those who have carved in wood (or stone) previously.

Support is available if you think you would benefit from help with following written or verbal instructions in English or with working independently. Please contact the 'Skills for learning and life' team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be group talks on issues concerning the whole class, otherwise teaching will be on an individual basis. There will be design projects set, for instance a head, a naturalistic subject or an abstract theme, but you are also encouraged to bring sketchbooks with ideas for discussion with the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Tools are provided by City Lit, although you may wish to buy rifflers (very small files) for reaching detail. If you wish to buy a set of woodcarving tools for yourself, you will be advised of suppliers during the course. Lime wood is available in the studio for purchase at cost (around £10 - £25 depending on size).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The department offers a variety of specialist sculpture classes. You will be able to get advice on these from your tutor.
