Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is aimed at those who have already some experience of sculpture and wish to develop their artwork, extending their sculptural techniques, subject matter and knowledge of the art form.

This course will look at all aspects of sculptural language – figurative, abstract and conceptual, ancient, modern and contemporary.

What topics will we cover?

The course will encourage a more in depth look at individual students' artwork, and that of professional artists, in terms of both technique and content. We aim to cover a wide range of material uses, processes, scale, presentation, use of maquettes, issues surrounding use of fabricators, technology and exhibiting/installation.

Where possible, we will take in a contemporary exhibition as a basis for discussion and source of inspiration.
Past destinations for the museum visit have included both Tate galleries, the British Museum, V & A and the Caro retrospective. You are encouraged to bring along sketchbooks, scrapbooks and photos to help develop your pieces of sculpture.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Develop themes in subject matter.
- Build upon previous sculpture technique.
- Appreciate various sculptural topics and have a critical awareness of other sculptors' work.
- Enjoy a deeper/wider insight and understanding of sculpture and three dimensional form.
- Make at least one sculpture.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for people who have taken the introductory sculpture courses or already have some experience in three dimensional artwork.

Support is available if you think you would benefit from help with following written or verbal instructions in English or with working independently. Please contact the 'Skills for learning and life' team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, practical activities, lively group discussions and individual tuition.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A selection of equipment and tools is provided, and basic materials are included in the course fee. There may be a small charge for larger quantities of materials. You should bring a sketchbook and tools for drawing, and a camera is also recommended.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
