Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a course for beginners where you can try a number of short projects as an introduction to the subject.

The course will introduce you to the basic skills needed to make sculpture. This includes learning different sculptural techniques, ways of developing ideas for sculpture, improving your designs and basic drawing for sculpture. You will also be introduced to the work of a wide range of sculptors.

This course will introduce all aspects of sculptural language – figurative, abstract and conceptual, ancient, modern and contemporary.

What topics will we cover?

The first part of the course will consist of short projects designed to develop your basic sculptural skills, focussing on the techniques of modelling, casting, carving and construction.

On the second Saturday, we will spend the morning in a museum looking at, drawing and discussing a variety of sculpture.Past destinations for the museum visit have included both Tate galleries, the British Museum, V & A and the Caro retrospective. You are encouraged to bring along sketchbooks, scrapbooks and photos to help develop your pieces of sculpture.

The latter part of this course gives you the opportunity to design and create a sculpture choosing a suitable technique, with help from the tutor.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- use a variety of sculpture techniques
- appreciate various topics on the subject and be aware of other sculptors' work
- have some insight and understanding of sculpture and three dimensional form
- take away at least one sculpture that you have made.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for all levels of ability.

Support is available if you think you would benefit from help with following written or verbal instructions in English or with working independently. Please contact the 'Skills for learning and life' team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, practical activities, lively group discussions and individual tuition.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A selection of equipment and tools is provided and basic materials are included in the course fee. If you wish to try a small carving, stone and wood need to be purchased from the department, costing about £8-£15. You should bring a sketchbook and pencils -2B, 3B or 4B pencils are recommended.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
