Course outline

What is the course about?

This short course is to give you a chance to work specifically on those ‘tricky’ bits of the face. We will spend an evening on each of the 3 areas to focus on those aspects that will help to make your whole figures or portraits come alive and feel more convincing.

What topics will we cover?

The course will start by exploring the different aspects of the human face how these have been interpreted by different artists. Working from your own features and other class members, you will create a different facial part in clay over the 3 weeks.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- show improved sculptural and modelling skills, of the eyes, nose and mouth from the human head
- appreciate the work of other artists who have worked with the human head
- prepare a small clay model for the kiln.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for all levels, beginners and those with some experience modelling.

Support is available if you think you would benefit from help with following written or verbal instructions in English or with working independently. Please contact the 'Skills for learning and life' team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught mainly on an individual basis, with some group discussion. The emphasis will be on practice with guidance.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A selection of equipment and tools is provided, and materials are included in the course fee.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
