Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is about developing skills in seeing and understanding three dimensional form by studying the life figure.

What topics will we cover?

There will be two set poses during the course: a portrait and a life figure. Modelling will be done in terracotta clay which will be fired when dry. Because of the nature of the material, it will not be possible to work on a large scale.

If you would like to gain some ideas for the work you will make this term, we recommend a visit to the Victoria & Albert museum. They run the ‘V&A inspired by’ competition aimed specifically at part-time adult learners. Further information can be found on the V&A website.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- use new skills and techniques for life modelling
- understand the proportions of the female figure
- understand the proportions of the male figure
- produce a life-size head using exact measuring skills
- manipulate clay and prepare it for firing
- appreciate the work of other sculptors who have worked from the life model.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for all levels, beginners and more experienced modellers.

Support is available if you think you would benefit from help with following written or verbal instructions in English or with working independently. Please contact the 'Skills for learning and life' team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Life modelling will be taught mainly on an individual basis, with group discussion on major topics concerned with life modelling. The emphasis will be on practice with guidance.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Materials are provided by City Lit, but you would be advised to buy one or two modelling tools. The suggested tools are the B range from Tiranti, B6 or 104-020 and B8 or 104-040. These are available in the London shop at 27 Warren Street, London W1 (Tel. 020 7636 8565) or by mail order from the Reading branch: 70 High Street, Theale, Reading, Berks, RG7 5AR (Tel. 01189 302775).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Life modelling is a good starting point for any discipline in sculpture. It helps to train the eye in the understanding of three dimensional form. The department offers a variety of specialist sculpture classes. You will be able to get advice on these from your tutor.
