Course outline

What is the course about?

This workshop course runs over three terms, each covering a specific project: carving a floral motif or piece of architectural detail, lettercutting a small panel and making a piece of carved sculpture from your own design. You can enrol for all three terms, or for a single term if you wish.

This third term focuses on sculpture.

What topics will we cover?

This third term focuses on sculpture. You will be introduced to contemporary and historical stone sculptures and through this consider the structural and conceptual properties of stone. You can use this as a starting point for ideas for your design or bring your own ideas. The first few weeks will focus on making maquettes (models) to explore your ideas using either clay and soft carving material. Various carving techniques will be demonstrated and you will be introduced to how to use and maintain carving tools.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Research and plan a design for a sculpture
• Have some knowledge of contemporary and historical stone sculpture
• Use and maintain tools correctly
• Create a sculpture in stone.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for all levels of ability.

Support is available if you think you would benefit from help with the basic maths on this course, such as, division and using a protractor, and with following written or verbal instructions in English or with working independently. Please contact the 'Skills for learning and life' team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, practical activities, group discussions and individual tutorials. You will be expected to carry out your own research and produce notebooks and sketchbooks.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Most carving tools and stone will be available in the studio but you will need to buy a riffler for finishing each carved piece. Information about the type needed, and suppliers, will be given during the course. You should bring a sketchbook and pencils.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Stonecarvers can go on to take a more advanced course such as the City Lit sculpture course.
