Entry into year 2 will be by interview. Consolidating the experience gained in year 1, you will pursue a more individual route, resulting in a body of work reflecting your own concerns. You will have one-to-one tutorials and group discussions. In the third term you will participate in an exhibition. Basic materials are included; for specialist materials there is an additional charge at cost price. Please call visual arts to arrange an informal interview on 020 7492 2700.

It may still be possible to enrol. Please call 020 7831 7831 to discuss. Please note that you will have missed some of the course content and it may not be possible for the tutor to fully cover this with you.
This fifth term of the course will support you in developing your individual practice to a higher level and in locating your position within contemporary sculpture. You will also be given guidance on how to prepare a portfolio or proposal for your work. You will be encouraged to identify a course, exhibition, project or commission that you would like to apply for and will be given the support to do this.
Strong emphasis is placed on developing a good working practice that will allow you to confidently research and develop innovative designs for sculpture. The focus is on independent study and developing a personal project but this will be with much help from the tutor. You will be expected to place as much importance on researching and developing your sculptures as in making them.
Group discussions on your work and on topical themes will help to develop your critical abilities. You will be expected to research the work of artists working on similar themes to you and will have guidance from the tutor on this. You will give a short (ten minute) presentation to the rest of the group on an artwork that particularly interests you.
- know how to develop a portfolio or proposal for your work
- present a sketchpad showing visual research and the development of your ideas
- demonstrate analytical and critical abilities
- place your work in a contemporary context.
This second year of the City Lit sculpture course is our highest level sculpture course and therefore not suitable for complete beginners. It is suitable either for those who have completed year 1, or for those who can demonstrate equivalent experience. There will be technical demonstrations to enable you to extend your skills base, but you should only consider applying if you already posess basic skills in the media you wish to pursue. If there is a specific skill you wish to learn, we have a wide range of courses in the sculpture department that can provide an introduction.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Demonstrations, practical activities, group discussions and individual tutorials. You will be expected to carry out your own research and produce notebooks and sketchbooks. There will be assessments made at regular intervals during the course and much guidance given throughout.
A selection of equipment and tools is provided and basic materials are included in the course fee. You will need to provide any specialist materials and tools. Stone and wood for carving can be purchased from the department at cost price. Please bring a sketchbook and pencils.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
