Discover how art in Europe and America between the wars reacted to the culture of the times. Explore the experimental world of architecture and design in the art deco and Bauhaus period.

Description

What is the course about?

After the First World War, artists, architects and designers responded to the massive changes wrought, in a wide variety of ways: from the clean lines of Bauhaus design to the exuberance of Art Deco; from the boom of the 20s to the bust of the 30s.
Find out how politics and propaganda played a part in architecture in the US as well as in Europe, with a particular emphasis on London. Look at how the decorative arts responded to the massive changes in society and in the influence of fashion in this period.

What will we cover?

- Setting the scene: the interwar period
- Design movements of the period including Bauhaus and Art Deco
- The development of Modernist styles in architecture
- The expansion of London and the influence of modern design on housing and public transport.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Identify and describe the key design styles of this period
• Describe and explain the modernist features of architecture and the decorative arts
• Participate in discussions about the expansion of London and its design influences.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for all levels.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught with short lectures, discussions, and guided tasks.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You might wish to bring a notebook. You might wish to buy some of the books on any reading list given out in class.
