What is the course about?

This intensive course will develop your skills and the discipline required to be ready to enter the real world of film and television acting. Using scene work and specialised exercises the course will increase your confidence and know-how, to feel ready and prepared when arriving on set.

What will we cover?

Character creation and how to remain truthful within challenging circumstances.
Understanding and working within complex disciplines.
Line learning and speed line learning.
Nuances of genre performance.
Working with demanding material.
A look behind the camera so students can better understand why certain decisions are made and how that can affect the process as an actor.
‘Real world’ skills such as ‘pick ups’ and ‘ADR’.

Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Previous experience required. You need to have developed your skills while studying on a number of Screen acting improvers courses, or their equivalent. Ideal if you have an Acting Degree or have completed an accredited acting course.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently and clearly.
• To read a script accurately.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In groups and pairs with scripts. Scenes will be worked, recorded and analysed with regular feedback. You will be asked to complete a data release form so that duologue or group footage can be shared with your scene partners for analysis and development. Some students may wish to use the footage for their show reels. Please consider if you are prepared and ready for this level of work and commitment prior to enrolling. If you need advice and guidance, please contact a member of the drama team.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Your tutor will advise if recordings may be made available via Google Classroom at the end of this course, subject to City Lit's privacy policies and current data regulations.
