British Sign Language (BSL) is an officially recognised language in its own right, with a unique grammatical structure. Using BSL will enable you to communicate with Deaf sign language users. Progress to advanced levels can also open up a range of employment opportunities to work with Deaf people. City Lit offers the fullest range of courses, enabling you to progress from introductory to level 6.
These sessions can be taught at any level and are designed to help you improve your BSL. You can ask your teacher to give guidance on specific areas of BSL. This can also be used to ‘brush up’ and practise before assessments and exams. If you are on one of our BSL courses and wish to undertake further practice in your own time then this is for you! Please contact the department for further details and to discuss your requirements. You will then be assigned one of our BSL teachers to work with you.
Have you always wanted to learn British Sign Language and communicate with Deaf people? Develop the skills you need to gain the level 1 BSL qualification, accredited by Signature. The fees for BSL level 1 and 2 courses include a year's subscription to Signworld.
Please note: you may wish to study BSL without the pressure of an exam, or just for fun. We can arrange for you to be taught without a formal final assessment and you will receive a certificate of attendance.
Are you on a level 2 or 3 BSL course and would like to get a better understanding of how role shift and referents are used in BSL? This workshop is taught by a highly experienced teacher and provides a perfect opportunity to focus on this important area of BSL to improve your knowledge and fluency.
This is an individual, one-to-one course which is suitable if you are already fluent in BSL at level 6. It is an ideal route if you work with Deaf people as you must be able to collect your own evidence externally for your portfolio. You will be asked to attend a series of five sessions which last for two hours each. The duration of the course is flexible as you will negotiate the dates and times of your sessions with the assessor.
Are you currently on a Level 3 course in BSL? If you need some guidance by an experienced teacher, this course will provide guidance and tips to help you develop strategies for how best to approach the level 3 receptive exam (Unit 321).
This course is ideal if you have passed level 2 in BSL and are ready to develop the knowledge and skills you need to achieve the level 3 qualification, accredited by Signature.
The course fee is £1261, plus an upfront fee of £188 payable at the time of your enrolment.
If you’re unable to pay the course fee upfront, you can choose to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan from the Student Loans Company to help cover the cost, repayable after the course ends. You can find more information about the Advanced Learner Loan www.citylit.ac.uk/advanced-learner-loans
