This course is about exploring and interpreting the medieval churches of the East Anglian landscape. This will offer a rare insight into British, Medieval building techniques, into patterns of worship and in turn into the minutia of everyday life that material culture can illuminate.
In this one day session at City Lit we will consider some physical aspects of the churches (eg. towers, napping, arcade pillars, funeral monuments and painted screens). We will also consider issues of patronage and the social and ritual use of the objects and structures under scrutiny.
- Identify the elements that make up a Medieval church
- Identify basic building materials and techniques
- Interpret the visual elements of an East Anglian church
- Begin to understand how and why church buildings were used by Medieval people.
The course is suitable for beginners; you do not need to have studied art history or architectural history before. However, it will also be suitable for students with some knowledge of the subject.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
This one day course will involve lectures, presentations and group discussions.
