Always wondered about art history and how to interpret paintings? On this course you will look at a wide range of images and explore broad questions such as how the picture is made, what is depicted, why and what it means. We will examine areas such as how historical context affects our reading of a work, the importance or not of the artist’s intention, the relationship of art to ideas and the role of the artist in society.
Please note: The course is not an historical survey of periods and styles. The course covers a wide range of art historical ideas, concepts and critical frameworks. We will explore key terms in art history and how to read an artwork; the different roles of the artist; and how context and display affect how we understand an artwork. There will be time for you to bring up points of interest that you wish to address.
• Use an expanded vocabulary of contemporary art terms and concepts.
• Evaluate art critically.
• Understand the range of contexts that affect the viewing experience.
• Speak in a group with more confidence.
The course is open to all. No prior knowledge of the subject is required.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Mornings will be spent in lectures/discussions at the college. The afternoons will be used to visit galleries to look at specific works in detail.
