Course outline

What is the course about?

This course provides an introduction to the wide range of art works within the collections at Tate Britain at Millbank and Tate Modern in Southwark. The course will explore specific works by historical, modern and contemporary artists in relation to wider cultural and social contexts, and aims to develop your confidence when looking at and discussing art within London galleries. For sessions 1-5 at Tate Britain we meet inside the Manton entrance on Atterbury Street (the side entrance).  At Tate Modern we meet at the small seating area in the Tate Turbine Hall.

What topics will we cover?

The course begins in weeks 1-5 at Tate Britain where we shall explore the development of British art from the Renaissance to the present day. We will explore prominent artists from a range of periods and reflect on how they have influenced the work of modern practitioners.

At Tate Modern, in weeks 6-10, we will explore the themed displays in relation to key 20th century art movements, and look at the key themes explored by the 21st century’s leading practitioners. This latter part of the course includes a deeper assessment of newer types of art – video and installation – common to the contemporary art scene.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- recognise different styles and types of British art
- recognise different styles and types of modern and contemporary art
- describe works of art in Tate Modern and Tate Britain and express an informed personal response
- talk about British art with greater confidence
- talk about modern and contemporary art with greater confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is open to all; no prior knowledge of the subject is required. There will be some short readings to support our contextual understanding of the works displayed and you will be invited to contribute to group discussions and debates.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be taught with a mixture of tutor lecture, short group activities and discussion. Handouts and reading materials will be provided by the tutor to support your learning on the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course fees do not include entrance to temporary paying exhibitions. You may want to purchase books from the reading list given out by the tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
