The course is about discovering the arts of Late Antiquity.
During this one-day course, we will explore the uses Christian artists made of the artistic heritage of Rome. We will look at and discuss ivories, sculptures, silverware and other works of art. The morning session will be taught at the Victoria and Albert Museum, with the afternoon at the British Museum. During the day there will be various breaks and opportunities for discussion.
We will explore the Late Antique/Early Christian collections at both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum to consider how Christian artists were inspired by and responded to Classical art.
- Understand the main characteristics of Early Christian art and explore it further with greater confidence
- Recognise ivories, sculptures silverware and other art works from this period.
The course is suitable for beginners; you do not need to have studied art history before. However, it will also be suitable for students with some knowledge of the subject.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs, and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

There will be a guided tour round the galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. There will be an extended lunchtime break, during which you are expected to make your way from the Victoria and Albert Museum to the British Museum.
