The course is about discovering how artists in Medieval Europe reacted to and were influenced by Islamic art.
During the visit we will explore artefacts, such as ivories, glassware and metalwork, in the Islamic and Medieval galleries at both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, to consider how Western artists were inspired by Islamic art.
- Recognise the characteristics of Islamic art in Islamic artefacts at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum.
- Recognise characteristics of Islamic art in European medieval artefacts at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum.
- Understand the main characteristics of the artisic relationship between medieval western Europe and the Islamic world.
- Understand the underlying similarities and differences in the art from these two interconnected cultures.
The course is suitable for beginners; you do not need to have studied art history before. However, it will also be suitable for students with some knowledge of the subject.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs, and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
There will be a guided tour round the galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. There will be an extended lunchtime break, during which you are expected to make your way from the Victoria and Albert Museum to the British Museum.

All students complete a 'statement of learning' form at the beginning and end of the course to assess their achievement. The tutor will provide informal feedback during the guided tour of the galleries.
