Course outline

What is the course about?

The course explores the major art movements and critical theories which have influenced the making and reading of Western art since 1900. It will also consider the impact of the world wars, the changing roles of artists and patrons, Freudian psychology, and so on.

What topics will we cover?

The course follows a broadly chronological survey of the major phases in modern art from 1900, including: Edwardian society in Britain and the shift to modernity; pre- and post-war Expressionism in Europe; Cubism and the road to abstraction; Futurist painting and sculpture; the Soviet Avant-Garde; Dada across Europe and in New York; visions of utopia and dystopia; the interior landscape; war art and alienation in figurative painting and sculpture; post-war America and Primitivism.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Recognise different styles/types of modern art
- Describe works of modern art and express an informed personal response
- Understand the shift to abstract art
- Understand the socio-cultural contexts for modern art.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is open to all. No prior knowledge of the subject is required.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be a slide presentation by the tutor with opportunities for group discussion throughout. There will also be some pair and small group activities. Handouts including slide lists will be provided weekly.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. However, you may wish to buy some of the books on the reading list or visit some of the exhibitions recommended.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
