Course outline

What is the course about?

From German composers to French painters and English poets, Romanticism swept through Europe
and America in the nineteenth century. This course will explore the great Romantic artists, discussing each one in depth.

What topics will we cover?

As well as an overview of Romanticism with reference to composers and writers (Keats, Wordsworth, Whitman and others), the artists looked at include: Goya, Blake, Palmer, Gericault, Delacroix, Friedrich, Runge, Constable, Turner, Cole, Church, Bierstadt, KØbke. We will also explore concepts like Orientalism, the sublime, the notion of genius, spirituality, manifest destiny, nationalism and femmes fatales.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand Romanticism and concepts like the sublime
- Recognise different manifestations of Romantic art
- Discuss the art of a variety of artists with greater confidence and express an informed personal response.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is open to all. No prior knowledge of the subject is required.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be slide presentations by the tutor with the opportunity for group discussion throughout. There will also be some pair and small group activities. Handouts including slide lists will be provided. You are encouraged to use the City Lit library and to explore suggested sites on the internet.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other costs, but you are advised to bring notebooks to the classes. You may like to purchase a couple of the books suggested on handouts during the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
