Course outline

What is the course about?

Beginners will learn & experience the creative excitement of exploring, in 3 dimensions, weaving, braiding & lashing techniques. More experienced students will exploit the creative surge from bringing these skills to new uses in new materials, developing into complex forms.

What topics will we cover?

• 3 dimensional weaving and flat and circular braiding.
• Manipulation and development of shapes and forms, and investigation of the effects of changes of scale.
• The properties of hard and soft, flat and round, linear materials and their response to different tensions.
• Introduction to historical and contemporary uses and artists.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

As a beginner:
- Use weaving and braiding techniques in two and three dimensional forms and in different materials
- Produce a range of relevant experimental samples / maquettes
- Explore historical and contemporary uses through group discussion

As an advanced student:
- Explore in depth different materials and understand how they react to different tensions and techniques
- Work in and develop more advanced techniques to realise your own designs
- Explore historical and contemporary uses through group discussion.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All levels welcome. Beginners will learn the basic techniques and those with more experience will develop more complex skills

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions and handouts to support your tutor demonstrations, and for health and safety information, and you will be invited to take part in group discussions. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstration, slide lecture, group work, individual tuition, discussion and practical work. Practising outside the class can be helpful but is not required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Some basic materials, equipment, and course notes are included as part of the fee.

You may want to bring some of the following; strong strings, cords, twines, flexible wires, tapes, ribbons, strips of fabric, plastic tapes and threads etc. A notebook and camera can be useful.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
