Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a new and exciting way to make baskets using telephone wire with the South African imbenge method. You will develop practical skills in working with wire and have the opportunity to explore the properties of the medium.

What topics will we cover?

- How to make a basket using a plaited rim, or wire ring
- How to set the distinctive colour patterns and make a lid

You will complete at least one basket and a lid.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

All Students:
- Design and make your own baskets and experiment with how patterns are formed.
- Utilise Imbenge basketry skills to develop and complete your own projects.

Students with some previous experience:
- Demonstrate some knowledge of starting a basket working freehand instead of from a mould.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for beginners and those who would like to continue exploring the medium. Those with some experience will have the opportunity to expand their ability to reproduce patterns from existing baskets.

No basketry experience is necessary. You will learn all the techniques necessary to design and make your own imbenge projects.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by demonstrations, practical work on individual projects, informal group discussions, individual tuition, handouts and looking at finished baskets and fellow students' work. You are encouraged to continue working at home whenever you can, in order to speed progress.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A materials allowance is included in the course fee, which will cover part of what is required on the course. Students who want to use wire other than telephone wire may want to bring their own but it must be equally flexible (no thicker than 0.50mm).

A good selection of wire is available from The Scientific Wire Company, 18 Raven Road, London, E18 1HW. You will need to provide your own notebooks and sketchbooks, small moulds, small side cutters for wire and a small blunt bodkin.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
