Course outline

What is the course about?

You will be introduced at beginners level to essential drawing systems for interior designers such as scale, plan, elevation, axonometric drawing and basic perspective drawing. Material will be user-friendly and includes sketchbook research at an inspiring location. To understand a space and your ideas for a space you need to be able to test those in scale and proportion. This course will help you to learn how to do this.

What topics will we cover?

Learn how to use architectural drawing tools and materials, draw simple plans and elevations to scale. Learn how to lay out drawings, how to draw and use axonometric projection (parallel Motion) and basic perspective. In addition to these formal techniques you will explore related sketchbook research in the V&A.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- use equipment and materials with confidence,
- understand the use of scale in drawing
- be able to produce basic plans and elevations to scale
- draw furniture on plan and elevation
- understand the concept of an axonometric projection, beginners level
- understand how to use one point perspective, beginners level
- research and document related information using your sketchbook.
- follow good studio practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is beginners level and suitable for all who would like to add formal drawing to their creative skills and to prepare for computer aided design and interior design courses.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A mixture of ‘hands on ‘work, demonstrations, group discussion, individual drawing advice and examples of interior designers' and architects' drawings. The course will include a morning or afternoon visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum for related sketch book drawing and research.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A hardback A4 sketchbook or sketchpad. Basic drawing materials will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
