Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is for all who want to learn how to represent ideas through illustration skills. The course will use interior design/ spatial design drawings as base.

What topics will we cover?

An introduction to contemporary principles and concepts of illustration in interior design, decoration and architecture. You will explore a variety of creative methods how to illustrate design ideas in theory and practice.
Please note: This is not a computer course in design illustration, although some use of computers may be included.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-understand the relationship between idea concept and its illustration
-explore and develop character and narrative to illustrate design ideas
-understand the relevance of context and related research
-generate ideas in response to a given brief
-use a range of relevant media
-follow good studio practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is ideal for those new to these areas, for those wishing to study for personal development, for a change in direction, or for those who want to try new ways of working.
The course is for all levels.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A mixture of lectures, work demonstration, one to one tuition, practical work on individual sample projects and informal group discussions. This course includes a museum visit.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic drawing materials and equipment are provided. You should bring an A4 hardback sketchbook or sketchpad. You need to bring colouring materials as advised by your tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
