Course outline

What is the course about?

Concentrating on ideas relating to spatial design and applied arts, you will learn how to document and develop exciting responses using a range of media and inventive approaches. The course includes external visits and studio work.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn how to develop the use of sketchbook(s) in a creative and professional manner; understand the essential concepts of the sketchbook to develop and back your ideas. You will explore how to create records of your ideas and how to build up precious sources for new work.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand the general principle of sourcing and recording of ideas using sketchbooks as a tool.
- Having gained an ability to use a wider range of visual research methods
- Have an awareness and understanding how to create effective and valuable research, visual note taking and reference material to support your design ideas.
-Have an understanding of basic colour theory.
-Follow good studio practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous experience is necessary. An interest in drawing skills is necessary. This course is for anyone with an interest in sketchbook development; however this course focuses on spacial exploration and three dimensional designs (e.g. rooms, furniture or 3D design)

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A mixture of short lectures, workshops, one to one and group tuition and informal group discussions. This course includes Museum visits and drawing off location.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic drawing materials and equipment are provided. You should bring an A4 hardback sketchbook or sketchpad. You need to bring colouring materials as advised by your tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
