Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a first introduction to Final Cut Pro as an editing package. You will learn the basics of this package and gain an understanding of some common editing techniques. You will each work on a Mac computer and use supplied clips to edit short sequences.

What topics will we cover?

An introduction to the FCP interface and to basic editing techniques such as insert and overlay.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Do a basic edit using the viewer window
• Perform an overlay edit
• Perform an insert edit
• Use the clip overlay function for both sound and visuals
• Use the selection tool
• Use the pen tool.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introduction to Final Cut Pro and editing in general. You do not have to have had any previous experience.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to enable you to benefit from the demonstrations, hand-outs, health and safety information and allow you to participate in group discussions.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be a demonstration of a particular aspect of FCP, followed by an exercise, allowing for some individual tutorial support. We will include some forum sessions and group discussions.
Handbooks, manuals and worksheets are available.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may want to purchase removable storage to collect and keep your data.
You might also want to consider purchasing other books related to the subject of film making and editing. We will also provide you with a range of handouts free of charge and you can make use of books in the library.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. The tutor will give you regular feedback generally and on a more individual basis. You will also have peer-reviews and be part of an overall culture of sharing feedback. A written report can be obtained on request.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
