Course outline

What is the course about?

Creating images with clipping paths in Photoshop and placing them in InDesign. Turning clipping paths on and off, running text around them (text wrap) and principles and strategies for working with complex images with clipping paths to be placed in InDesign or QuarkXPress.

What topics will we cover?

• Creating, saving and refining selections in Photoshop
• Converting selections to paths and choosing tolerance settings
• Using the Pen tools to create and manipulate paths
• Saving clipping paths and settings for different printers
• Placing images with clipping paths in InDesign and applying text wrap and offsets
• Choosing and changing which part of the image protrudes outside its frame
• Trouble shooting clipping paths.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

In Photoshop:
• Convert selections to paths and a path to a clipping path
• Create and manipulate paths with the pen tools

In InDesign:
• Place images with clipping paths and apply text wrap and offsets
• Place and align versions of the same image with clipping path on and off
• Identify correct file formats for printing images with clipping paths.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Some previous experience using these programs is required, whether on Mac or PC. This course is taught on Macs but any differences between Mac and PC will be explained.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course consists of mini-tasks, discussions and demonstrations. Mini-tasks will be supported by one-to-one tuition where necessary. You will be supported by the tutor and your peers when developing your coursework.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Handouts will be supplied as appropriate. No books are necessary to take this course, but you should have a notepad for your written notes and visual ideas.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
