Course outline

What is the course about?

In this course you will not only learn the process of writing and drawing comic book pages but you will learn how to plan, create and draw comic book pages quickly and effectively.

What topics will we cover?

A full course outline will be given out at the first session.
- Creative figure drawing
- Scripting for comics
- Character design
- Designing a comic page
- Inking
- Lettering and speech balloons.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Plan a 4 page comic book
- Plan and execute sketches for the comic book
- Create a drawing in stages
- Create characters and draw them recognisably
- Understand how to break a story down into a sequence of images
- Write, draw and ink one full page of the planned book comic book.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is an introductory course but will also benefit those with experience in drawing comics, cartoons or storyboards at any level. You can gain practical knowledge of creative figure drawing techniques in advance through following exercises as outlined in books such as How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way by Lee and Buscema.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

By practical illustrated demonstrations, followed by practical exercises. The course will require you to draw a lot. In some circumstances you may be asked to finish an exercise in your own time, ready for the next class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your own pens (fineliner pens medium to thick), 2H pencils and sketch books. Other material will be provided.
The book ‘How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way’ by Lee and Buscema would be good to know.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Constructive feedback is welcomed at all stages of the course.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
