Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn to use Final Cut and gain an understanding of the fundamentals of digital editing. As well as gaining an understanding of the conventions of digital editing you will also learn how to construct narratives.

What topics will we cover?

We will cover various aspects of editing, both in technical and conceptual terms. This includes basic editing techniques using cuts such as A/B rolls, inserts and overlays. You will also learn how to construct a narrative sequence.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Use Final Cut to perform basic editing in the viewer
- Perform an insert edit
- Perform an overlay edit
- Use the selection tool
- Use the quick-edit tool to trim edits
- Use the pen tool to create key points
- Work across different layers /tracks
- Use the clip-overlays in sound and image.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introduction to Final Cut Pro and editing in general. You do not have to have any previous experience in digital editing.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be a demonstration of a particular aspect of FCP, followed by an exercise, allowing for some individual tutorial support. We will include some forum sessions and group discussions.
Handbooks, manuals and worksheets are available.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may want to purchase removable storage to collect and keep your data.
You might also want to consider purchasing other books related to the subject of film making and editing. We will provide you with a range of handouts and notes and you can make use of the relevant selection of books available in our library.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. The tutor will give you regular feedback generally and on a more individual basis. You will also have peer-reviews and be part of an overall culture of sharing feedback. A written report can be obtained on request.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Your views will always be welcome by the tutor.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

By the end of the course you should be comfortable to work with your own material and to experiment on your own, either at home or in our open access programme. After this course you may want to join a more advanced digital editing course or a digital video production course at City Lit.
